Dojo Holiday Party 2012

Another year at Taiko Dojo has come and gone, and we finished the year in style with a great holiday party.  This year’s celebration was made even more special by the inclusion of many of the guest artists that performed at the ITF concert.  In attendance were members of Maikaze Taiko, Cal Raijin Taiko, and UC Davis Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan.

Following our usual tradition, most of Dojo’s members showed up early, to clean the Dojo before the party.  Participation was very high this year as we scrubbed, swept, wiped and organized.  The dust bunnies and cobwebs didn’t stand a chance, as we finished in no time.  The Dojo will go into the new year as bright and shiny as it can be.

After all the hard work, it was time to eat, drink, and be merry.  Family and friends arrived and everyone collected inside the Dojo.  Sensei and Nosuke-san called up some guest artists and a few Dojo sempai to participate in the kagami-wari, or the ceremonial breaking open of a sake barrel.  There were a few first-timers wielding the hammers, and a few sleeves were purified with a good splash of sake.  With the barrel opened, everyone raised a glass for a toast to the great efforts and successes of the past year, and to celebrate the gathering of our whole Taiko Dojo family.

Sensei then announced that it was “time to eat!”  If there is anything Dojo members like as much as Taiko, it’s a good pot luck!  Everyone really out did themselves, bringing all sorts of tasty dishes and yummy treats.  The spread of food and desserts was amazing.  Sensei, guests, and super-sempai led the way as we ate and drank our way into a happy daze.  It was also a great time to catch up with old friends that we don’t see often enough, and new friends that we just met.

This was also a good opportunity for each of Dojo’s classes to do a last minute run through and final polishing of their contribution to the last show of the year – the Dojo Holiday Recital.  Each class had spent weeks developing and working on a special song to perform.  Mark Siegel was our Master of Ceremonies and introduced each group with his usual eloquent style.  The show opened with our Childrens’ Class performing an enthusiastic medley of “Taiko Train” and “Matsuri” that brought big applause and even bigger smiles.  Next, was the Adult Beginners’ Class performing a spirited “Hiryu Sandan Gaeshi”.  You could see and feel their excitement and pride as they played for friends and family.  It’s always wonderful to be able to witness and share such unabashed spirit.  The Adult Intermediate Class kept the momentum going with a rousing “Yodan” on not one, but two full Yodan sets!  They whirled and danced their way along an impossibly complicated path through the drums.  It was thrilling and fun to watch.  Next, it was time for a guest group to perform, and Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan stepped on to the stage.  They played one of their original songs for the audiences’ enjoyment.  Their youthful energy shined as they showed us why they will be one of the up and coming college groups in the coming years.  To follow youth with youth, Taiko Dojo’s Rising Stars performed next.  They played their song, affectionately called “Too Many Sides”.  As usual, they thrilled the audience with their intricate movement, and ended with a crescendo of paired solos and a cheering crowd.  Then, last but not least, it was time for Sensei, Dream Team, and the Adult Advanced Class to perform.  They started with a thunderous “Yatai Bayashi”.  That was followed by Nosuke-san dancing his amazing “Shi Shi Mai” with Sensei on drums.  Without skipping a beat, they transitioned immediately into the ever popular “Rokudan” with individual solos at the end.  And when Dojo does solos…..they do solos!  It was 14 solos in all, with some of the Rising Stars and Sensei himself joining in!  When the dust settled, the crowd was cheering and asking for more.   Dojo never leaves an audience wanting, so out rolled the Odaiko and an encore of “Tsunami”.  The soloists raged, the energy built, culminating in the final pair Hideki and Hiroki.  They shook the roof of the old building (it’s a good thing we dusted).  Hiroki pushed on, and with his final ending cue, the performers released a powerful kiai and the audience burst into applause.  Then,…….it was over.  

As always, all good things must come to an end.  And like the year that was, it was a great time!  As we look forward to the year ahead, let’s continue to build on this great legacy with enthusiasm and that unique and wonderful Taiko Dojo spirit!

2012 International Taiko Festival

We had yet another spectacular weekend for our 44th Annual International Taiko Festival this year.  Held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Lam Research Theater, this year’s concert hosted by SF Taiko Dojo, brought together taiko groups and ensembles from around the Bay Area and Japan.  We were pleased to welcome back and showcase our good friends and esteemed guest artists from Japan, Wako Daiko.

We were once again blessed with the artistic and powerful ensemble that is Tiffany Tamarabuchi and the Sacramento Taiko Dan, who were accompanied by the up and coming calligrapher Aoi Yamaguchi, who created a calligraphic masterpiece live onstage to the sounds of Sacramento Taiko Dan drumming.

We were all so moved to find out later that the characters that she wrote out were 鼓舞 【こぶ】 "kobu" which means inspiration; encouragement. The word is made from the kanji characters for drum and dance. 

Friday night’s performance also featured the dance and taiko infused group, Girl Brigade, who put on a bone-chilling performance with a strong social justice message, using the medium of their dance, voice and taiko.

What also really made this year’s concert stand out from others was the matinee concert on Saturday, that was produced by Bruce “Mui” Ghent, a former SF Taiko Dojo performing member and current leader of Maikaze Daiko.  Mui brought together groups from all reaches, from our good friends and supporters, Grass Valley Taiko, to youthful energetic collegiate groups like Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan from UC Davis and CAL Raijin Taiko from UC Berkeley.  We were so fortunate to also have a variety of taiko and Japanese folk dancing from the Ensohza group, who performed a more traditional version of Soran Bushi and the beautiful dance piece Sansa Odori.  Mui’s group, Maikaze Daiko, gave a thrilling performance with a bit of Gojinjo style drumming thrown in there to spice things up.

As for SF Taiko Dojo’s performances, the highlights were :
1)    The newly choreographed Soran Bushi, with over 20 SF Taiko Dojo members taking over the stage with UC Davis Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan for Saturday night’s performance.

2)    A full-blown Sokobayashi classic performance with SFTD’s Performing Group (including a timpani drum solo)

3)    The Junior Rising Stars (aka Sarita-san’s kids) performing Matsuri Daiko, and the Rising Stars performing Many Sides, as well as a newly choreographed piece, which for now is just called “the new piece”.

4)    The always anticipated and powerful Tsunami, which began with a chanting and prayer by Eiji Tsuchiya for the victims of last year’s devastating Tsunami in the Tohoku region.

An unusual event that I feel needs mentioning as we look back on this concert was the unfortunate event of having the leader of Wako Daiko having to return to Japan immediately after touching down in SFO, upon hearing news of his father’s sudden passing.  We were all devastated to hear the sad news and knew that the right thing for the leader to do was to turn around and be with his family.  While it was a difficult decision to leave behind his group, he knew that he could rely on them to still make a great performance, especially under Tanaka-sensei’s guidance.  With side stage curtain support from all of us, and also supported backbeat on stage by Tanaka-sensei, they four performers were able to pull off such an amazing and physically demanding performance with all of their spirit and energy they had.  They knew that they were doing it for their leader, his father and for their own memory.  They left it all on stage.

This year’s ITF was not unusually exhausting, as they all generally are.  From the perspective of someone who has been with SFTD for 13 years, I feel like every year we are pulling off the greatest impossible feat and doing it all together as a family.  Even when there are unknowns and very little time to do run-throughs and technical rehearsals and stage spiking, and knowing that there are always going to be last-minute changes, unexpected events, we always manage to somehow get through and still get out there on stage and put everything we’ve been working on all year out there for the audience to enjoy.  We don’t show that we’ve been in the theater since 8am on our feet, running around making sure our guests are taken care of, that the equipment is all set up and ready, that the stage is set for all of our guest performers.  Its just part of being part of SFTD and being backstage.  It is an honor and privilege to be so thoroughly spent by the end of the weekend, to be even a sliver of this long tradition and legacy that Tanaka Sensei and the pioneer members have created for us. We all know it and feel it and that’s why we come back year after year. 

For many of us, emerging from that theater life and the dojo life you live all weekend is a difficult transition, as many of us head back into our regular work weeks.  To try and describe what you’ve just experienced over that weekend to anyone who asks “How’d the concert go?” is just one of those things you can never muster up the energy or words to quite describe it.  You just know that you’ve been a part of something spectacular, have made strong connections with friends and that you will eventually recover, rest up and gear up for next year’s.

Montana Folk Festival - Message & Big Thanks from Sensei

コンサートツアーの経験の少ないメンバーとライジングスターで構成されたNew Teamで参加したMontana Folk Festival。多少の不安はあったが、道場伝統のスピリットとチームワークで頑張り全てのコンサートでスタンディングオベーションだった。
 
主催者の対応がよく運営もスムースでFestivalが大成功であった事に敬意を表したい。

スポーケンとローカル モンタナ太鼓グループが大切な太鼓を貸してくれたおかげで、演奏活動がスムーズに運び、大成功の一因であった事に感謝です。食事を共にしたり、ワークショップで新しいグループとパイオニアのグループが交流出来た事は何よりの幸せ。このFutureグループは音楽のセンスが素晴らしく伝統打法の基本をもう少し練習すれば、良いグループになると信じます。あまりにも短時間であったため、"Tanaka Magic"が発揮出来なかったのが残念。

48人乗りのAir PlaneでPerforming Tourは初めての経験で驚きましたが、同乗でコンサートに向かったHawaiian Music GroupがSouth SFのNeighborであった事はもっと驚きでした。洗練されたプロの演技が素晴らしかったのは当然として、彼らがなんと優しく親切な人たちであった事か。若い道場メンバーを励ましてくれた事はとてもありがたい事であった。 帰りのAirportでは、Familyに不幸が発覚した道場のメンバーのために、リーダーがギターを弾きながら朗々と歌ってくれた。哀愁をおびた歌は、その場の人々の涙をさそい忘れがたいものでした。

この様にこのコンサートツアーは多くの人達に助けられて、大成功のうちに終わる事が出来た。

We participated in the Montana Folk Festival with a new team consisting of members who were less experienced in concert tours and the Rising Stars. I had some anxiety, but everyone worked hard. With the traditional dojo spirit and teamwork, we had standing ovations at all three shows.

I would like to honor the huge success of the festival thanks to the organizers' smooth operations.

Because Spokane Taiko and Montana Taiko, who graciously lent us their important drums, all our shows went smoothly. This was a big part of the success. The things that made me happy the most were the times we ate together and the music exchange between the new and pioneer Taiko groups through a workshop. These new groups have beautiful music sense. With a little bit more practice in traditional taiko drumming, I believe they will flourish to be  better groups. Since we had such limited time there, I regret that I couldn't bring "Tanaka Magic" to them.

It was my first time - and a surprise to me - to go on a tour in a 48-passenger plane. But it was more surprising to find out that the Hawaiian Music Group who we shared the plane ride with is a neighbor to us in South San Francisco (our practice studio is located in South San Francisco). Of course their sophisticated music was amazing; what touched me was the fact that they are such kind and friendly people. I was grateful because they encouraged our young dojo members.

On the way back home at the airport, the leader of the Hawaiian group played and sang a song sonorously and beautifully for one of our members who found out about a loss of his family member. The melancholy song brought tears to some of us and I will not forget this easily.

We were fortunate to have had so much support from so many people, and because of it, we were able to conclude this concert tour with much success.

Montana Folk Festival



















I know it’s a little late to post about SFTD’s trip this summer to the Montana Folk Festival, but our time there was so epic that it just seems right to start a Dojo blog with this story.

There were ten of us who went to perform at the Folk Festival in July 2012 – Sensei, Taiyo, Michelle, Irina, Kai, Hiroki, Hideki, Elias, Miwa and myself.  When we got to the airport, we had our first great surprise – Kumu Kawika Alfiche and his traditional Hawaiian Halau (whose real name is Hālau o Keikiali`i but is endearingly referred to among Dojo members as “The Hawai’i Group”) was also travelling from SFO to the Folk Festival, and we were on the same plane!  They spotted us all sitting in our matching jackets and stopped by to introduce themselves before we even got on the plane.  Sensei was very impressed.  We later learned that their Halau is just a few blocks away from Dojo in South San Francisco.  What are the odds of so many awesome people being in such a small square footage of space?

Once we landed in Montana, we all climbed on a charter bus to ride the 1.5 hours from Bozeman to Butte, where the Folk Festival is held.  Michelle had never been outside of California, so it was fun to see her amazement at the Rocky Mountains when we arrived in Montana.  What was even more amazing was that it was just us and the Hawai’i group on the bus – and they sang and played music the WHOLE drive.  They started with traditional songs, but worked their way into familiar songs that we all knew (they sang with BEAUTIFUL, heart-rending harmonies, I must add), and by the end of the trip, we had a big sing-a-long going.  The only thing missing was the campfire and S’mores.

When we got to Butte, we met the folks from Montana Taiko and Spokane Taiko who had traveled many hours to lend us their drums for our three performances over the weekend.  Melissa and Tina from Montana Taiko knocked my socks off with their can-do attitude and ability to get things done quickly and efficiently.  It felt like an almost instant sisterhood!  And they gave Sensei a bottle of Montana-grown whiskey, which we had the pleasure of enjoying for the next two nights.  Aaron from Spokane Taiko was brilliantly shy, Johanna the exact opposite, and I’m pretty sure Marcia studied back episodes of MacGyver to come up with some of her great ideas. 

We also got to meet Marian, our hospitality contact for the Festival.  She was downright awesome! Whatever crazy request we made of her, she pulled out her phone and made it happen.  With a smile.  And often some deadpan remark that sent me into inappropriate laughter.  She became a trusted source of information, an excellent ally, and an instant support staff of one. 

So with this cast and crew, plus the Hawaii Group staying in the same hotel, we pretty much had it made.  Our first performance went smoothly, and it became very clear very quickly that many people in Montana had never seen anything quite like Taiko Dojo! The sound guy at the first stage told us afterward that the event producer came over during our performance and told him he needed to turn our microphones down because other performers were complaining.  The sound guy’s response, “Uh, they’re not miked.”  That’s taiko, baby!

Marian tracked us down at dinner that night to let us know that there were thunderstorms rolling in.  As luck would have it, we were scheduled to perform on the only covered stage that night – the tent had walls and everything.  When I told her I was unconcerned about the weather, she said, “But how are you going to get the drums to and from the stage?”  I laughed and told her that she hadn’t yet seen the ghetto side of Dojo.  With the permission of both lending groups, we ended up wrapping all of the drums in trash bags and transporting them that way. 

That evening’s show was off the hook crazy!  The tent was packed with people who were buzzing with energy.  And they were DRU-UNK!  It was so much fun to drum for them, though they were so loud and enthusiastic that we couldn’t hear some of our cues.  It was a wild, exhilarating night, and it was one of the most fun and exciting performances of Tsunami that I remember doing.  Yum.

Our final performance was to be Sunday afternoon on the main stage, which happened to be built around a giant metal structure used for mining in the past.  Turns out this is not such a good place to be when there’s a lightning storm, which turned into a rain storm just before we were going to start our set.  We ended up huddled in a nearby building waiting for the rainstorm to pass.  At first, they talked about pushing back all the rest of the performances so that we could still do ours, but as time dragged on, they began to lean toward cancelling our set.

The most amazing thing happened next.  Melissa from Montana Taiko asked whether there was an alternate venue where we could perform.  Someone nearby knew the principal of the local Catholic high school, which has a 400 seat auditorium.  Half an hour later, the school had been opened, the drums had been transported, and way more than 400 people were packed into that little room.  They were sitting on the floor, lining the aisles, packed in the back.  No one worried about fire code or liability, they just knew people wanted to see taiko and they made it happen.  It was amazing. 

Sensei decided that instead of doing our 45 minute set, we would do a whole show.  We were all floating so high that almost every song felt like it was the best one ever.  Even the song we totally screwed up felt great.

That evening was filled with celebration.  We had an excellent dinner with the Montana and Spokane taiko groups, at which Sensei asked each of us to say a little speech.  Afterward, we went with the Hawai’i Group to the Silver Dollar Saloon (!!!), where there was live Latin music and dancing.  Sensei blew all of our minds by being an amazing salsa dancer, then later getting up on stage and rocking out on the drum kit during a Reggae set. 

The following morning we said our goodbyes and set off for the airport, where we received our last gift from the Hawai’i group.  (At least during this trip.)  The night before, one of our members learned that his grandmother had passed away, and Kumu Kawika sang an incredible song that he wrote for his father, who has also passed.  It was beautiful and heart-breaking, all at the same time. 

Through the Montana Folk Festival, we met some folks with whom we have created amazing memories and life-long friendships.  I know that all of us who went felt like our lives were somehow changed by this experience, and I think I speak for all of us when I say we are grateful.  Here are pictures to prove it.
